Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. Two things follow. First try the first item here.

If after a day or so, still no luck, Read and follow the 2nd item. The 2nd item will take a long time too, but will sort of reset Windows Update. It has worked for me in every case, and I have done this to a lot of computers Before you start Windows Update, if your computer has not been up and running for a few days or more, start it and let it run without using it for some hours.

Turn off the sleep functions if they are set. If yours is a laptop, make sure it is powered with the power cord. I just did this on a laptop that had not been used for about 70 days. It took the best part of a day to finally settle down and be ready.

Windows Update is dramatically slower than it was in the Spring of , before Windows 10 began its merciless march. There may be nothing wrong with your computer! The problem is a hopelessly inadequate Windows Update service.

Likely it is overwhelmed sending millions of 5 gigabyte Win10 files to unwilling Win7 computers, using the same equipment and network that normally services you and I. They do not want you updating Windows 7. They want you replacing it with Windows There is no reason to do this upgrade unless you are a real adventurer. Windows 7 will be supported through January I have seen cases where the green bar in Windows Update continued overnight and finally found the updates, then spent many more hours downloading those updates.

Check to make certain the 4 needed services are starting properly. If any one of the services, were not already started, type services in the text box above the start globe and find each of those services in the list list below. If they are not set to automatic, double-click the service and set.

You can do this while Windows Update is running. They should be shown as Automatic or Automatic delayed. If they are not, double-click on each as necessary, and change setting to Automatic. Next, we need to prepare your system to properly handle Windows Updates. It will take a long time like a day or more , but in almost all cases this gets Windows Update back on track. Now re-start Windows Update.

Do NOT restart Windows. Be very, very patient, it will likely take a long time. Recently, the whole process has required 24 hours or more elapsed time in my work on my client computers.

This may take many hours. This is a very common problem lately. The most important tool you need right now is a lot of patience. Windows Update resources at Microsoft are prioritizing Windows 7 updates at a very low service level and have been since early Summer It is not uncommon for Windows Update to take as long as an over-night.

Type the following in the black box:. Type services in the text box above the start globe. Find each of the following and ensure they are set to automatic: Background Intelligent Transfer services, Cryptographic, Windows Installer, Windows Update. Double click on each item and choose automatic. If you still have a problem , try this.

It will take a long time, but in almost all cases gets Windows Update back on track. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 4 people found this reply helpful.

I now have some sort of problem with 'no graphics driver compatibility'. It seems to be just one problem after another. I'm still working through your excellent reply this sort of thing takes me some time as I'm a beginner. There was a problem installing Office which meant that the laptop crashed and MSN had to fix the system 'remotely'. That was on Feb 16th and since then no Windows Updates have downloaded. I think there have been some as others using laptops have downloaded updates.

I have to undertake all this at the library, where I am now as I don't have internet where I live. I'm not fully conversant with jargon or fixing computer problems which is why it takes me some time to work through things.
