Now back to the story. By the summer of , 26 year old Paul Bernardo was coiled and ready to strike. The memory of the rape and accidental murder of his fiancee's teenage sister wasn't enough to satisfy his violent desires. Nor was 20 year old Karla willing participation in his recreated sexual fantasies.

Paul wanted to take what he desired by force on June 7th, hoping to satisfy her husband's appetite for a young, virginal teens, Karla invited a friend over to spend time with them. We don't know the girl's name, so we'll call her Natasha. When she visited Paul and Karla, they'd relax her with food and wine, then manipulate her into playing their sexual games. More than once, Karla ordered Natasha to perform oral sex on Paul.

On one occasion, Karla drugged Natasha's drink and Paul raped her. After she passed out the next morning, Natasha woke up feeling sick but didn't realize why, thinking she'd had too much to drink.

She headed home, embarrassed with no one knocking on his door. Paul felt cocky and was ready for his next attack. Just a short week later, on June 15th, , Paul cruised through the streets looking for prey. Sometime after one a. Leslie missed curfew that night and was dreading waking her parents to be let in.

When Paul spotted her, he decided she was perfect, playing up his charms and good looks, he lured the teenage girl to his car, offering her a cigarette.

She came close enough to chat with the 26 year old, and when she was within striking distance, he pulled out a knife. Using the weapon, Paul maneuvered the teen into the car. He then forced her to put on a blindfold and sped off into the dark before anyone saw them. When he arrived home, Paul forced Leslie inside. He let her into the guestroom, where he undressed and raped her, all while Karla slept upstairs. It wasn't until hours later that he woke his fiancee to tell her what he'd done.

It's difficult to imagine what might have gone through Karla's mind when she heard Paul's shocking news, but it seems she was content to leave him to it. She kept to herself, waiting patiently upstairs while he spent the rest of the day torturing Leslie. After a long day of sustained abuse, Paul brought his still blindfolded victim upstairs to Karla.

He instructed his fiancee to prepare drinks for them to enjoy over a friendly chat. Karla noticed that even before she had any alcohol, Leslie seemed out of touch with reality. This was likely a result of the trauma Leslie endured for hours on end. Diminished alertness, dulled sensory functions and bewilderment are all common symptoms of the first phase of rape trauma syndrome coined by therapists Ann e Walbert Burgess and Linda Lytle Holstrom in The term refers to the group of reactions emotional, physical and behavioral reported by victims of attempted or completed rape.

Unable to fully process the horrific experience, Leslie's body likely shut down some cognitive functions, resulting in her trancelike days. Still, when Paul asked her about herself, Leslie spoke with clarity. She told her captor that she wanted to go home to see her little brother, Ryan. But Paul ignored her request. He had something else in mind, Don asking questions. Paul produced his video camera and set it up to record.

Just like with Tammy, he wanted to remember every moment. For the next several hours, he and Karla raped the teenager together. Almost 24 hours since Leslie's abduction, Paul showed no signs of exhaustion. On the contrary, he seemed to relish the experience. While Karla recorded with a video camera, he ordered Leslie to praise him, feeding her lines to pare it back.

He loved the control, but he also wanted validation and worship from his victim. Paul's twisted desires support the theory that he lives with malignant narcissistic personality disorder, though he's never been formally diagnosed.

According to Dr. Eve Gallagher, Dr. Kenneth Levy and Frank Yeomen's, malignant narcissism is the most severe form of narcissistic personality disorders. It causes people to take pleasure in their aggression and sadism toward others. It's clear that this sadistic pleasure was a strong driving factor in Paul's life. He even wanted sex with Karla to be violent and forced. So with a helpless young victim under his roof, he enjoyed his free reign. When at last, Paul was done taking pleasure in Leslie's pain, he left the poor girl bloodied and bruised on the floor.

Leslie called out to Karla, perhaps hoping the 21 year old would come to her rescue. But Karla ignored her cries. Paul explained to his fiancee that Leslie knew too much to be allowed to live. She might have seen his face, he said, or remember his car.

So they had no choice. Karla didn't argue with him, but she did suggest they at least sedate Leslie with sleeping pills so she wouldn't know what was happening during their trial. Paul claimed that Karla then gave the young girl a lethal dose. Karla alternatively testified that Paul strangled Leslie with an electrical cord the next day on their way home from a Father's Day dinner with Karla's parents.

The couple stopped at a hardware store to pick up some concrete mix. When they got home, Paul dismembered Leslie's body, hoping to make it easier to dispose of and more difficult to identify. That night, he case Leslie's body parts in eight blocks of cement and then dumped them into a nearby lake.

And while Leslie's parents worried over their missing daughter, Paul and Karla, prepared for their wedding on June 29th, the eve of the happy couple's big day, a man and his wife went canoeing in Lake Gibson.

They came across the concrete blocks, have submerged in mud at the lake's edge. When the couple looked closer and saw that there were body parts in the cement, they raised the alarm. Hours later, as the sun set a dozen local police officers around the scene, they fished out the heavy concrete slabs and waited until morning to retrieve what they'd missed. When they returned, they found Leslie McCarthy's severed torso floating in the middle of the lake, though they wouldn't confirm the body was Leslie until later.

News of the gruesome discovery made a splash around Ontario, but the discovery of their victim did nothing to derail Paul and Karla's nuptials. They were in the middle of getting married when the news broke, despite her parents fears that it was too soon after Tammy's death to celebrate. Karla's wedding was extravagant, just as she demanded. The only mention of Tammy she allowed was a brief reference in her father's toast, otherwise all eyes were on Karla and her dashing groom while the murderous newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii.

Investigators finally identified Leslie's remains and determined the cause of her death. But there was little else for them to go on. And the investigation went cold. Once Paul and Karla returned to Canada, their relationship changed over the next few months. Karla lost faith in the man of her dreams. She later recalled. After it was all over, it was revealed in the press that while the plea bargaining was going on, she allowed herself to be picked up in a bar and began a sexual relationship with a patron. Later, she was sending him nude pictures of herself via mail.

It is my position that Karla Homolka was a sexual predator and serial killer, as was Paul Bernardo, but that law enforcement and the justice system, blinded by their prejudices, could not and would not accept that a woman was capable of these obscenities, even in the face of video tapes showing her doing it.

The excerpt I posted was the first transcript I have seen of the actual tapes, and I posted it here as evidence that Karla Homolka literally got away with rape, torture and murder and I thought everyone would find it interesting and relevant. I did not post it because it was steamy. Anyway, thank you for saying you appreciated the post, publically. We're all adults here, right? This is a point well taken, Melissa. I think I made some assumptions about this group that I shouldn't have before my original post.

Mea culpa. Incidently, do you or anyone else know if Karla was paroled last summer? Under the terms of her plea bargain, she was due, and I wonder if she walks among us again. On the other hand, Paul Bernardo is in a cage very much like the one inhabited by Hannibel Lector in "The Silence of the Lambs" only smaller.

It's an isolation cell with bullet-proof plexiglas over the bars, with some holes drilled in it. His cell contains video cameras that watch his every move 24 hours a day. It is how he will spend the rest of his life, as he should, but Karla should have one just like it.

What's the big deal about something graphic being posted? We all read these books with hundreds of half disguised photos of murder victims, listen to the tortured tales of survivors of these monsters and read thousands of gory descriptions.

I wasn't offended at all by the post. I have read two books about this case, each one only alluding to the video tapes, so it was interesting and informative to have the description posted. I think the fact that Aileen Wuornos, for example, killed while working as a prostitute does not introduce a sexual element, except that sex is what got her and her victims together in the first place.

I wonder if there are any women who have killed with sexual motives, but alone. I agree with you, at least based on the transcript you posted, that Karla seems to be at least equal to Bernard in guilt. But while men commit these types of murders almost routinely, are there any known examples of women who kill for sexual pleasure?

By themselves? Henry asked for a comment -- I gave him one. I do not think the excerpt gave any sense of the questions he now apparently wants to pose. I do not accept that there are not good questions to be asked about the choices we make re the material we post.

I think that the motives for these questions are self-evident, and not simply accountable for by hypocritical prurience. I do not understand why you respond in this way, Captive. She did not apply for parole last summer, as I understand it. The latest thing up here on Bernardo, by the way, is that his discussions with his original lawyer about the tapes can be used at the trial of the lawyer.

A court made the ruling in past days. The lawyer was instructed by Bernardo to enter the house after the police search and retrieve the unfound tapes. The lawyer kept the tapes for 17 months before enventually giving them to police and over the period that the Karla Homolka deal was struck. The lawyer has been charged with obstructing justice.

Charges of possession of child pornography the tapes have been dropped. That was a silly bit of over-charging by Crown and police to begin with. She and Bernardo are in prison here in Kingston, Ontario She may be getting moved soon if the woman's prison closes This idea has been in the works for awhile Howard is the resident "expert" on Karla FWIW, I found your original post horrifyingly graphic, but read every word with interest. While she likely was IMO abused by Paul, the info about her comments was something to consider.

It led me to go look up more on the 'Net. Wondering where WPT is these days. I would like to see his response to your posting, know whether he read that book. I would like to read more about this case. I also remember hearing that Paul Bernardo put on a lot of weight and doesn't want anyone seeing him now.

Welcome to the group, Henry! Daphne Henry E. You argue SL's right to that, why not Henry's? Btw, I thought in your eyes, if people deem something not appropriate to be posted here, that was censorship? And he is, after all, talking about a true crime. Mary Ann. While it was graphic and may have distressed some people, it's unfortunately also fact - and people need to be aware that monsters like this exist and can look and act just as 'normal' as anyone else.

Being informed makes you more aware; it's also helped to save some people. There have been numerous women who have killed in a serial fashion, mostly for monetary gain, some for power, and some with a sexual motive though not usually involving the person they killed.

There are several very good books out about women killers who are now looked at as more of a serial type killer, rather than as just a killer of many. I have read that if those tapes had been made available before they made the deal, there wouldn't have been a deal. I think the lawyer who suppressed them should not only be disbarred, but should spend a good long time in jail.

At the time these horrible murders took place, I don't think those in law enforcement could accept that a woman would voluntarily do those things; and battered women cases were extremely prevalent in the news - at least here in the US. But as we've all seen over the last several years, woman are capable of the same or similar atrocities that men are.

I also think Henrys' questions totally pertain to that excerpt. Would you feel differently if he had asked the questions at the same time he posted the excerpt? You are failing to take my point, Mary Ann, which is not that he should be stopped from posting, but that we both have a right to comment on what he has posted.

I am surprised, though increasingly less so, that you cannot seem to take this point. Raising a question is different from stopping: crucially and critically so. Your apparent failure to see the difference really misses the point. Oh come on. No one's allowed to pick on Melissa but me. And I say she's a grown-up. I'm not so sure everyone else is, though. Bernardo remains at Kingston Penitentiary, but Karla was moved several months ago from Kingston's Prison For Women to a cushy, country-club-like prison in Montreal.

I don't remember the actual name of this "prison" but it's known locally as "Club Fed". This is unfortunate as if she is to have a successful career in the adult video industry she should start while the bloom is still on the rose.

I really don't see how this desire of yours to see Bernardo tortured and humiliated is fundamentally all that different from his habit of stuffing sticks and twigs into the vaginas of teenage girls. Sort of a "Bernadocam" What's the web address? Uh, I think you have forgotten what happened, Mary Ann. It wasn't me who made the fuss, I just asked a question. That question elicited a series protestations and questions such as Captive's from a number of you which I have attempted to answer appropriately, although they seemed less than pertinent to mine.

Now this. I agree that Henry's questions are interesting: I have no quarrel with Henry, you may notice. I never quarrelled with his questions. You have missed my point, again. I got it in the supermarket, in paperback. The second time Karla and Paul were together the first time was in a hotel room the night they first met was at her parents house. Karla lead Paul to her bedroom, got on her knees, and handed Paul HER pair of handcuffs, and pulled her skirt up around her waist.

Karla loved rough sex, both as the submissive, and as the aggressor with women. The law enforcement people on this case blew it from top to bottom. They decided the only way they would be able to close it was to make a deal with Karla, because they hadn't seen the video tapes.

They did, however, have one two minute tape dubbed "The Karla Sex Tape" which they had found in the house. The tape shows Karla having sex with three different girls. The first was a prostitute whom Paul and Karla had hired to have sex with Karla.

The second girl is referred to as "Jane Doe" because she is still living. The segment with the third girl is the most pertinant. You only see part of a comatose young woman. Karla straddles her, takes the girl's hand, and uses the fingers in her vagina. Much later, after the deal was struck, it was determined the the third girl was Leslie Mahaffey, and that she had probably been dead when Karla used her fingers.

Karla Homolka was and is an evil sexual predator, just as Paul was and is. How the prosecution could go on with their "deal with the devil," even after seeing all of the tapes, is simply astonishing.

Thanks for your post, Patty. Well, they actually did see the tapes in time to cancel the deal. One provision of it was that she had to be truthful with them, right down the line. Of course that tapes clearly and graphically showed she lied to them. I've looked at several serial killer couples, and it's the same in almost every case, the woman gets a sweetheart deal. Law enforcement is the most macho of professions, deeply embued with patriarchal traditions and the attending prejudices.

To admit that "the little woman" can be as savage and base as men can would threaten their world-view. In other words, they have blinders on. Even the F. It is F. At least part of the FBI's rationale is that the female half of serial killer couples usually leaves the actual killing to the male. During Leslie Mahaffey's killing, Karla told the police that she was blow-drying her hair.

I think that should be seen as a crucial part of the female serial killer's profile. If a person aquiesces to a murder, if they're in a position to stop it and don't, then that person is as guilty as the one who drops the hammer. Charlene Gallego kidnapped, tortured and raped ten young women, then stood by and watched Gerald kill them.

That doesn't make her less guilty of the murders, in my opinion, nor does it mean that she is not a serial killer. FWIW, I found your original post horrifyingly graphic, but read. Second, there is nothing in that excerpt that sheds any light on Karla in terms of her "willingness" for lack of a better word to be involved in those crimes or her level of culpability.

The video was obviously a theatrical production and, out of context, we don't have a clue as to the circumstances under which it was produced. To that extent, the except was nothing more than gratuitous pornography posted here under the self-justifying guise of being "useful" material to true crime fans. These were sex crimes, so there is little question as to motivation and payoff.

The excerpt was posted, it has been explained, because it sheds a different light on Karla's level of willingness as an accomplice. I don't see how it does that. The excerpt sheds no light on degree of coercion, extent of "free will," or other physical or psychological circumstances under which Karla Homolka's "performance" was rendered. I can't come close to forming an opinion about her level of guilt based on that excerpt alone.

Was she drugged?
